Minister Sargent Welcomes funding for housing projects in Balbriggan and Swords.

Commenting on the announcement today of financial support for numerous housing projects nationwide, including some in Fingal, Minister Sargent said that despite the difficult economic situation, the government has recognised the need to look after the most vulnerable in our society and is providing the funds necessary to provide suitable housing for them.

The grant aid of 157 million euro announced today by Minister for Housing and Local Services, Michael Finneran TD,  includes provision for 12 housing units at Hamlet Lane in Balbriggan, 7 at St. Michaels House in Swords and 2 units at Pinewood Green Court, Balbriggan. These are all operated by voluntary bodies which also provide a number of additional services including communal meals, laundry and security.

In these challenging times, the role of voluntary organisations becomes even more important. Minister Sargent continued, I am pleased to see that we have been able to secure for them the necessary financial support to allow them to continue their important work.

Minister Sargent also expressed the hope that Minister Finneran would soon be issuing a call for proposals for further projects, perhaps making use of available built housing, in addition to the new build schemes already funded.

Launch of Balbriggan Youth Service

President Mary McAleese officially opened Balbriggan Youth Service, operated by Foróige, the National Youth Development Organisation, at 5pm on Monday 15th February. The Youth Service, formerly managed by a volunteer committee under the name Cryptic, was taken over by Foróige in January 2009 after the organisation was approached by the volunteers to more effectively meet the growing needs of the youth population in Balbriggan.

President McAleese was greeted by Chairperson of the National Council of Foróige, Pat McLoughlin and Senior Youth Officer, Derval Cumiskey in the Courtyard, which was full of excited young people enjoying the music of youth band, “The Unknowns”, accompanied by the Balbriggan Youth Samba Drummers. Following a tour of the Youth Service and informal chats with some of the young people, the official launch began. MC, Princess Siwlea and Kieran Dowling, a member of the youth committee spoke of their experience in the Youth Service. Co. Dublin VEC Development Officer, Jim McVeigh and Pat McLoughlin thanked the President for coming and spoke of the immense benefits of the Youth Service to the community and the young people.

Robert Baxter, a member of the young boys group presented the President with a bunch of Flowers as a token of the organisations’ appreciation and President McAleese unveiled the plaque and officially pronounced Balbriggan Youth Service open.

Balbriggan Youth Service is the hub of youth activity in Balbriggan. A wide variety of young people get involved, from those who drop in the odd time to hang out, to the youth committee who run the youth café and those more vulnerable young people who engage in specialised services, such as drug education programmes, teenage health programmes and intensive one to one work, to meet their targeted needs.  There’s something for everyone in Balbriggan Youth Service so young people can access intensive support in a non-stigmatised way.

Pat McLoughlin, Chairperson of the National Council of Foróige said, “Balbriggan Youth Service is much more than a space. In Balbriggan Youth Service, staff and young people openly interact with each other; it is where friendships are made, happy memories are created and valuable life skills are developed.”

President McAleese spoke of the opportunities available to young people involved in the youth service. She said, “The youth service gives you opportunities that bring out the best in you. It is not for other people to bring out the best in you but for you to grasp

Minister speaks to Airline boss about possible new jobs.

Minister Trevor Sargent has reported that he has been in regular contact with Tanaiste and Minister Mary Coughlan  T.D. to find a way to ensure Ryanair does locate 300 new jobs in the vacated SRT premises as proposed by Ryanair CEO Mr. Michael O’Leary. This morning at 9.00 a.m., Minister Sargent went to the Ryanair offices at Dublin Airport to meet with Michael O’Leary along with other local T.D’s.  Minister Sargent stated that The Tanaiste is indeed looking forward to meeting Mr. O’Leary today with a view to delivering the 300 plus jobs which could re-employ many of the skilled former SRT aircraft maintenance staff and others.Following the meeting, Minister Sargent contacted the Tanaiste to appraise her of the meeting with the  Ryanair boss.  Both the Taoiseach and the Tanaiste are taking a hands on approach to making this plan for 300 plus new jobs for Fingal a reality.  As the local Minister in the area, I believe the will and wherewithal exists to have the world’s largest airline base a substantial and growing part of its aircraft maintenance business in Dublin, said Minister Sargent.
